One way to meet ELA standards is simply through Genius Hour units where students are required to research, write a speech or paper, and create projects. There is a section for Genius Hour if you'd like to learn more about how I've utilized these units.
Another way to meet these standards is to simply integrate ELA into science and social studies units, again through research and writing about specific topics.
However, I've found that specifically focusing on creative writing has really gotten my students excited about writing, vastly improved their writing in all subjects areas, and students have actually enjoyed writing when it wasn't the same-old-same-old that the regular classroom typically presents.
